Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information SkateU collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. It covers the SkateU mobile app and the SkateU website at skateu.app.

In this policy, “SkateU,” “we,” and “us” mean Liam Jahyun Chu, a sole proprietor doing business as SkateU in Virginia.

1. Information we collect

We collect the information described below. We do not use advertising trackers in the app. If you allow it, the app may use your device’s GPS location on the device to show you on campus maps. We do not store that GPS on our servers. If a product-analytics SDK is configured for your build (currently PostHog), the app may send screen views and feature events. If crash reporting is configured for your build, the app may send crash reports to a crash-reporting provider.

Account information

If you create an account, we collect:

  • Email address
  • A hashed password, if you sign up with email
  • A public username
  • Sign-in tokens needed to keep you signed in
  • A private record that you confirmed you are 13 or older, and when you confirmed it

We do not ask for or store your date of birth. Legal acceptance records are not public and are not used for analytics.

If you sign in with Google or Apple, those companies share information they are authorized to share with us, which may include your email and a name or profile image URL. SkateU may store that sign-in image URL, but the app only displays a profile photo after you upload one in SkateU and it passes review.

Your email is not shown publicly. Your username, profile photo, and profile bio are public and may appear on spots, comments, and profiles.

Content you submit

If you use account features, we store:

  • A profile photo, if you upload one
  • A public profile bio, if you write one
  • Skate spots you add, including name, description, map pin coordinates, and photos
  • Comments and replies
  • Likes
  • Spot removal requests, including the reason and any details you write
  • Comment reports, including the reason and any details you write
  • Accounts you block
  • Help & Support messages (contact, bug reports, feature ideas, and spot-problem reports) and any screenshot you attach

Help & Support screenshots are stored privately so our team can see them. They are not shown to other people in the app.

Spot photos and profile photos are stored so other people can see them. When you upload a new spot photo or profile photo, SkateU processes the file on our servers before it is stored and before it is sent to the moderation provider. We remove extra information commonly stored in image files, including GPS coordinates, camera or device details, and capture timestamps. We keep the photo itself and preserve orientation so it still displays correctly. The public photo is this processed file. Spot photos uploaded before August 21, 2026 may still contain that extra information.

Location

When you open a campus map or the map used to add or edit a spot, SkateU may ask for location permission while you are using the app. If you allow it, the app uses your GPS on the device to show where you are and to move the map to you. Those coordinates stay on your device. We do not send your GPS to SkateU servers, and we do not send it to PostHog. You can deny location access and still browse maps and place spots by panning the map.

We do store:

  • Coordinates for schools in our school directory
  • Coordinates you choose when you place a spot pin on the map

Those pin coordinates are part of the public spot. They come from the pin you place, not from an automatic upload of your GPS.

Information on your device

The app stores some information on your device, including:

  • Your sign-in session
  • Schools you mark as favorites, which are saved on that device and are not synced to your SkateU account
  • Unpublished spot drafts, including the name, description, map pin, and photos you started adding. Drafts stay on that device until you post or delete them. They are not uploaded to SkateU until you post. Signing out does not necessarily delete them. You can delete a draft from Profile. Deleting your account clears drafts for that account on that device. Removing the app from a device also removes local drafts.
  • On iOS, a stored Apple user identifier used only to check whether Apple Sign In is still authorized.

Website Android beta requests

If you request Android beta access on skateu.app, you must be at least 13 years old. We collect your email address so we can confirm it and add you as a tester in Google Play’s closed test. That list is separate from a SkateU app account. We do not store your 13+ confirmation with the beta request record.

iOS testers install through Apple TestFlight. We do not collect an email on the website for iOS. Apple collects information under Apple’s privacy policy.

The website may briefly use your IP address to limit signup abuse. We do not store that IP address as part of your beta request record.

The website may also save the beta email you typed in your browser’s local storage so the form can remember it.

Information we do not collect in the app

The SkateU mobile app does not currently collect:

  • Advertising identifiers

Product analytics

If a product-analytics SDK is configured for the app build you are using (currently PostHog), we may collect:

  • Screen names you visit in the app
  • Feature events such as signing in, opening a campus map, viewing or adding a spot, liking a spot, posting a comment, and submitting Help & Support
  • An anonymous device identifier, and your account id if you are signed in
  • App version and technical information such as platform and OS version

We use this to understand how SkateU is used and to improve it. We do not use this for advertising. We do not send your email, username, message text, photos, or GPS to PostHog. Analytics can be left unconfigured in development builds.

Crash reports

If a crash-reporting SDK is configured for the app build you are using (currently Sentry), we may collect:

  • Technical information about a crash, such as device type, OS version, app version, and a stack trace
  • The time of the crash

We use this to find and fix bugs. We do not use crash reports for advertising. Crash reporting can be left unconfigured in development builds.

2. How we use information

We use this information to:

  • Create and maintain your account
  • Confirm that you are eligible to have an account
  • Show schools, maps, spots, photos, comments, and likes
  • Show your location on campus maps on your device when you allow location access
  • Let you add, edit, like, comment on, request removal of spots, report comments, and block other accounts
  • Hide spots and comments from people you blocked
  • Moderate usernames, profile photos, profile bios, spots, photos, comments, and Help & Support submissions
  • Email you a confirmation or account-deletion code when you request one
  • Email our team when a spot needs review, when a comment is reported, and when you send Help & Support
  • Diagnose crashes and keep the app running
  • Understand how people use SkateU so we can improve it
  • Feature public spots, photos, descriptions, campus names, and usernames on SkateU’s Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube
  • Operate, secure, and improve SkateU
  • Communicate with you when you contact us
  • Send confirmation or related messages if you requested Android beta access on the website

3. Moderation

Before certain content is posted or delivered, SkateU may send it to a third-party automated moderation provider (currently OpenAI) to check whether it appears to violate our rules. That can include:

  • Usernames
  • Profile photos
  • Profile bios
  • Spot names and descriptions
  • Spot photos
  • Comments
  • Help & Support messages and screenshots, to filter sexual content, threats, and similar material before they reach our inbox

We do this to help keep SkateU usable for a campus community. Help & Support messages are not shown to other users. We do not use that provider as a public feed, and we do not sell your content.

4. How we share information

We share information in these limited ways:

  • Public in the app. Usernames, profile photos, profile bios, spots, photos, comments, like counts, and school information are visible to people using SkateU, including people who are not signed in. Your 13+ confirmation and Terms acceptance are not public.
  • SkateU social accounts. We may post public spots, photos, descriptions, campus names, and usernames on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Those platforms receive whatever we post and have their own terms. This is featuring content you already made public in the app. It is not selling your information and it is not advertising targeting.
  • Service providers. We use companies that help us run SkateU. They receive information needed to provide their service:
  • Supabase, for accounts, database storage, and photo storage
  • Google, if you sign in with Google or if we add your confirmed website email to a Google Play closed test
  • Apple, if you sign in with Apple or install the iOS beta through TestFlight
  • OpenAI, for automated moderation of the content listed above
  • Resend, to send certain emails, including Android beta confirmation and operator notices when a spot needs review
  • Sentry, for crash reports when that SDK is configured for the app build
  • PostHog, for product analytics when that SDK is configured for the app build
  • Map tile providers (including OpenFreeMap / OpenStreetMap and Esri) and map libraries, which receive network requests when you view maps
  • Expo, which we use to build and run the app
  • Website analytics. The marketing website uses Vercel Analytics. That is separate from the mobile app and is not installed in the SkateU app.
  • Legal reasons. We may disclose information if we believe it is required by law or needed to protect people, SkateU, or others.
  • Business transfer. If SkateU is transferred, information may be part of that transfer.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

5. Retention

We keep account and content information while your account is open and as needed to operate SkateU.

  • Spots and comments may remain after an account is deleted, without being tied to your username, as described below
  • Spot removal requests associated with your account are deleted when the account is deleted
  • Comment reports and account blocks associated with your account are deleted when the account is deleted
  • Short-lived verification records used to confirm account deletion expire quickly and are then deleted
  • Android beta confirmation links expire after a limited time

Hosting providers and moderation or email providers may retain logs or content according to their own practices. This policy does not control those third-party retention periods.

6. Account deletion and your choices

You can:

  • Browse much of SkateU without creating an account
  • Edit or delete spots you added, while signed in
  • Delete comments you posted
  • Report comments and block other accounts
  • Unlike spots you liked
  • Change your username, profile photo, or profile bio
  • Sign out
  • Delete your account from Settings in the app

Deleting your account permanently removes your sign-in, profile, likes, spot removal requests, comment reports, and account blocks. Spots you added stay in SkateU and are no longer linked to you. Comments you posted stay in SkateU and are shown without your username. Unpublished spot drafts for that account are deleted from the device.

School favorites saved on your device are not part of your account. Removing the app from a device removes that local data.

To delete your account, go to Profile, then Settings, then Delete account, and confirm with the code we email you. You can also email support@skateu.app if you need help.

7. Children

You must be at least 13 years old to create a SkateU account.

SkateU is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. We do not ask for date of birth.

If you indicate you are under 13 before an account is finished, we do not keep that account. If you believe a person under 13 has created an account, email support@skateu.app and we will take steps to close it.

8. Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information, or to ask questions about how we use it.

Email support@skateu.app to make a request. We may need to verify that the request is from you.

You can also delete your account in the app, which removes or unlinks information as described above.

9. Security

We use service providers and access controls to protect information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. Please use a strong password and keep your sign-in details private.

10. Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. If the changes are significant, we will provide additional notice when that is practical.
